Letter from the Publisher

Dear Readers,

I am sorry to say that the summer ’08 issue is our last.

In 2006, my wife Julie, and the editor of Designer Quilts Magazine was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. MS is an incurable disease that attacks the central nervous system. Lesions in the brain and on the spine cause a variety of symptoms from blindness to the inability to walk. Julie has relapsing and remitting MS which means that her symptoms come and go without warning, and each attack takes a little bit more away from Julie’s health. Although Julie was in her forties when she was diagnosed, most victims are women in their early 20s, just as they are beginning their lives.

The effects of Multiple Sclerosis can be devastating. The only treatments available are immune system modifying drugs. Julie has to inject herself with the medication three times a week. The drugs do not cure MS, but it is hoped that they will make attacks, called exacerbations, less severe and give victims time while we wait for a cure.

As most of you know, Julie and I have produced the magazine ourselves since the first issue in 2004. But since Julie was diagnosed, we have had to outsource magazine to a graphics company. We thought this would reduce the stress and energy it takes to put out Designer Quilts Magazine, but unfortunately , this has not been the case. And while the graphics company, DMG, has done a wonderful job, too much of the responsibility for the publication remains on Julie’s shoulders.

And so the summer issue will be the last. A section of this issue is dedicated to Multiple Sclerosis. This disease, like breast cancer, strikes mostly women and we all hope that the quilting community will support fundraising efforts for Multiple Sclerosis as they have supported other important causes. We have developed a web page where you can make contributions to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and information. about contribution can be found on the Designer Quilt Magazine website:
